Tapping into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/christmas-advent-calendar-tradition-luxury-products-chanel-social-media\/a-74823371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the growing \u201cluxury\u201d advent calendar trend<\/a>, roasters like Onyx Coffee Lab, Grind, Pact, Pirates of Coffee, and more design their own every year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have become a staple seasonal product in the coffee industry, allowing roasters to showcase up to 25 coffees at a time. They feature a compartment, flap, or door for each day that reveals a small gift or surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first commercial calendars, which typically included chocolate, were developed in the 1950s. But today, they can include beauty products, small toys, coffee, tea, and alcoholic beverages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driven by the popularity of \u201cunboxing\u201d social media content (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/tiktok-unboxing-luxury-fashions-low-cost-marketing-tool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a cost-effective marketing tool for luxury brands<\/a>), premium advent calendars have become a lasting trend. In 2021, fashion house <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/extras\/indybest\/christmasgifts\/advent-calendars\/chanel-advent-calendar-2021-contents-review-b1971204.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chanel released its first-ever advent calendar<\/a> to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its iconic Chanel No. 5 perfume, which quickly went viral.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the years since, more specialty coffee roasters have tapped into the trend, designing their own calendars to offer between 12 and 25 different coffees. Some opt for a 24 or 25-day version to maximise variety, but most prefer a 12-day format to make product development more manageable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pactcoffee.com\/christmas\/single-advent-calendar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advent calendar<\/a> features 25 different coffees, which is a very exciting way to introduce customers to the incredible range of flavours and characteristics in specialty coffees from around the world,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/will-corby-67056854\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Will<\/a>, the director of coffee and social impact at the UK\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/pactcoffee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pact Coffee<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to show customers, some new to specialty coffee, as many unique natural flavours as we can, whether that\u2019s chocolate praline, strawberry cream, or candied plums,\u201d he adds. \u201cAs a long-standing UK tradition, Advent has been a particularly thoughtful and engaging way for us to do this, and when it involves incredible coffee, it can genuinely benefit the wider industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c87xex4pr7xo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demand for luxury advent calendars continues to grow<\/a>, tapping into \u201clittle treat\u201d culture, coffee calendars offer the excitement of \u201cdaily discovery\u201d and ritual, appealing to a wide range of consumers, not just specialty coffee enthusiasts. In turn, they are becoming effective marketing tools for roasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt gives customers a reason to think about your brand 24 days in a row,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/abbasalidina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abbas<\/a>, the founder of Toronto\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/piratesofcoffee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pirates of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/piratesofcoffee\/\">Coffee<\/a>. \u201cIf a roaster approaches it as &#8216;just a cool box\u2019, it might feel like a stressful one-off project.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut we see it as an annual flagship experience with good planning, storytelling, and follow-up. This gives roasters time to source their coffees, tweak packaging designs, and coordinate marketing strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlanning takes the whole year, if not longer,\u201d Will says. \u201cOur first meetings take place in the second week of January, when we lock in volumes and begin the search for coffees with the characteristics we want to feature.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The selection process for coffee is key, and often the first step. Roasters can be guided by their existing stock and consumer demands, or choose to focus on limited-edition lots for more high-end products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom the first cupping table to the samples arriving in the UK, every step is designed to ensure we find coffees that truly stand out with their festive tasting notes,\u201d Will says. \u201cOnce we\u2019ve identified these coffees, we carefully secure and store them, holding them until they\u2019re ready to be roasted closer to December.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the goal of an advent calendar is to expose customers to a range of coffees, variety is crucial. By offering a wide array of tasting notes and roast profiles, customers can expand their palates and develop their preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur calendar is designed as a curated journey, so we choose the coffees rather than letting customers select individual days,\u201d Abbas explains. \u201cWe mix approachable profiles (chocolately\/nutty) with rare coffees (experimental and unique coffees), and sprinkle in some exclusive and limited lots that only appear in the calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want the 24 days to feel like going on a voyage with a beginning, middle, and end, as opposed to random coffees thrown into a box,\u201d he adds. \u201cThe surprise and curation are part of the magic, and it keeps the logistics realistic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coffee freshness is another vital consideration. Given the high number of coffees per product, roasters need to find ways to prioritise quality and freshness. A major part of this is choosing between whole bean and vacuum-sealed ground coffee sachets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur coffees are whole bean only, which gives us more breathing room on shelf life,\u201d Abbas says. \u201cWe release in batches and don\u2019t roast everything months in advance. We plan roasting schedules so roasting and packing happen as close as possible to the shipping window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re also very clear on cutoff dates, so customers receive calendars close to December, not sitting for months,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Considering packaging for coffee advent calendars<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond coffee selection, designing and assembling packaging is one of the most exciting yet time-consuming parts of advent calendars. Housing up to 25 different coffees in one product requires precision, care, and thoughtful design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRoasters should not underestimate the intensity of the packing process,\u201d Abbas advises. \u201cThe packaging is the slowest part. For us, the coffee is flexible since we have a wide variety of beans from around the world. However, boxes, canisters, inserts, labels and custom die lines take the longest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI recommend prototyping the workflow by doing a \u2018dummy run\u2019 of ten to 20 units to see how long assembly takes and which steps are bottlenecks,\u201d he adds. \u201cYou want to iron out the kinks ahead of the holiday production season so you can be most efficient at crunch time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The positive impacts of selling advent calendars can last long after the holiday season, but roasters must invest in effective marketing strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlan the post-calendar journey to develop a relationship with customers after the holidays,\u201d Abbas says. \u201cPutting in place email flows, landing pages, and special targeted bundles lets people buy bags of their favourite days and nurtures them into long-term customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe look at the calendar as both a product and a brand experience,\u201d he adds. \u201cIt generates revenue, but it also introduces customers to many coffees they wouldn\u2019t usually try and drives repeat purchases in January and February.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/perfectdailygrind.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Doors-of-advent-calendar.webp\" alt=\"Doors of advent calendar.\" class=\"wp-image-122532 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/perfectdailygrind.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Doors-of-advent-calendar.webp\" alt=\"Doors of advent calendar.\" class=\"wp-image-122532 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/perfectdailygrind.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Doors-of-advent-calendar.webp 1000w, https:\/\/perfectdailygrind.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Doors-of-advent-calendar-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/perfectdailygrind.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Doors-of-advent-calendar-150x113.webp 150w, https:\/\/perfectdailygrind.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Doors-of-advent-calendar-768x576.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Coffee advent calendars become more and more popular every year, but designing one is more challenging than roasters might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt takes a tremendous amount of development and problem-solving, but we\u2019re thrilled with the level of freshness we\u2019re now able to share as each sachet is opened,\u201d Will says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These products offer a truly creative outlet for roasters to showcase their coffees and design unique packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a privilege to create something that becomes part of someone\u2019s build-up to the festive period,\u201d Will adds. \u201cEven on Christmas Day, we get to contribute to that moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Enjoyed this?
